Blessed Mother Painting Professionally Photographed (11/27/06)
On November 27th, just prior to being
transported from the artist's studio for
installation in the Sanctuary Atrium, The
Blessed Mother Apparition painting was
professionally photographed with state
of the art equipment.
The monumental work of art, measuring
seven by ten feet, was digitally scanned
utilizing the Better Light Scanner, the
highest resolution photographic
scanning device in the world. The
scanner is fitted to the back of a standard
four by five inch view camera and is
then connected by cable to a powerful
laptop computer which allows the scanned image to be viewed and stored immediately.
The resultant image yield a resolution of 6,000 X 8,000 pixels or the equivalent of fortyeight
megapixels.
The file size is in excess of one hundred fifty MB. Rather than a
spontaneous single shot photograph, the sensing device within the scanner moves slowly
along a track and takes over five minutes to scan the full image from top to bottom.
The image is then stored and can be viewed in graphic programs such as Adobe
Photoshop, where it can be optimized in many ways such as precision color balance,
removal of shadows cast by the framing and much more.
Future plans include the creation of limited edition prints in a variety of sizes via the
Giclee process, which replicates the look and feel of the original painting to a remarkable
degree and yields an archival image that will outlast the lifetime of the owner.
